When I mention I’m a ghostwriter, some people get that glazed look in their eyes and say, “Oh. That’s interesting.” I know they want to ask me what a ghostwriter does but don’t want to appear ignorant. And some people say, “That’s great. I’ve never met a ghostwriter. What exactly do you do?”
So to clear up the mystery and mystique of us ghostly creatures, I thought I’d talk about ghostwriters this month. Though I probably should have waited until October to fit in with Halloween. Oh well, anyway, here goes.
So what does a ghostwriter do? What a ghostwriter does is write something for another person under that other person’s name. That way the book, article, column, etc. appears to have been written by the person whose name is on the book, etc. but it was primarily written by the ghostwriter.
The person who hires the ghostwriter has something to say and for whatever reason needs someone else to put it into words. Words are the tools of the ghostwriter. They take the ideas from the person’s head, from research, or other written materials and formulate the finished product: book, article, etc.
The ghostwriter may write the whole book or parts of the book. The ghostwriter may do all the research or some of it. The ghostwriter may work on his/her own or in partnership with the “author”. The ghostwriter may get credit as co-author, editor, or in the acknowledgments as some sort of help. Or there may be no mention at all of the ghostwriter.
Generally the ghostwriter gets paid up front for the job, but in some instances the author may negotiate a partial payment with partial royalties. Each situation is unique.

Once you finish writing your ebook and saving it as a PDF you’re ready to load it on your website (and other websites including Amazon) and start enjoying the fruits of your labor.
You say you’re not satisfied; you still want a print book? Not to worry. First take a few weeks, sell a few books and listen to the feedback. It’s easier to make edits in an ebook than a print book! Ouch! When you’re sure your ebook is just how you want it, you’re ready for the next part of your journey.
At this point, authors must decide if they want to find an agent and publisher or become a self-publisher. I can’t make that decision for you; you have to weigh the pros and cons of each. To boil it down, you have more control and more profits as a self-publisher. You have more prestige and less work to produce and distribute your book if you get a publisher.
In both cases you’ll have to do the bulk of the promotion! Sorry, that’s just the way it is. Most publishers only promote their top name authors, so if you don’t get people to buy your book, the bookstores will ship your books back to the publisher and you won’t earn any royalties.
Now if you decide to self-publish you’ll have to weigh the pros and cons of using a POD (print-on-demand) press or the printer down the street (or in the Mid-West). My clients are doing both and everyone is getting a high quality book. You just have to do your homework. Ask other authors, join a writing group or organization, get online and do the research.
All new authors start from scratch and are pretty savvy after their first book experience. My favorite client, a 93-year-young crusader for healthy eating, is still learning after his sixth book!
I know you can do it. It’s a lot of work, a lot of fun, and fantastic rewards!

You want it quick and easy! Don’t we all? I know you can do it. Look, I bought a 25-page ebook for $57. Do I sound dumb? The author sold me on the value, and I fell for the sales pitch. It could have been just the information I was looking for. Well, in that case it wasn’t and I was able to “return” it and get my money back.
You can’t really return an ebook. But anyway, all I’m saying is that it was 25 pages, and anyone who’s an expert on anything can write 25 pages in 25 hours or less. If you wrote for two hours a day for 12.5 days, you’d have a 25-page ebook done! If you wanted a 50-page ebook, write two hours a day for 25 days.
You say you don’t have the time for even that? Want to know how to find the time?
The quickest way to write your ebook is to decide on your topic, create an outline, and sit down and write. The best way to write an ebook is to follow this process; it might take a bit longer, but you’ll write an ebook that will sell:
- answer this question: what is my motivation for writing this ebook?
- answer this question: what is the motivation for the reader to buy my ebook?
- select a topic that will fill both of these motivations
- create an outline that will take the reader from where they are to where they expect to be when they finish reading
- turn your outline into the table of contents
- gather data you’ve already written or collected on the subject and plug it into the appropriate chapters; create new content where you need it
- weave all the content together, read it over to make sure it meets your motivation and the reader motivation
- have five people in your target audience read it; get feedback; make adjustments; get it edited professionally
- design your cover and interior or have it designed; save it as a PDF
This is pretty much the process for writing an ebook quickly. Of course there are more details, but this covers the basics. However, I work with many reluctant writers, and frankly it’s much easier and a lot quicker to get your first ebook done than your first print book.
Want to know why?
Okay, here’s what I’ve found. I can motivate people to write a short ebook quickly and get it loaded on their website to start selling much quicker than they can get a print book done. Why? Because you write your ebook—anywhere from 25 to 50 pages (or more)—then save it as a PDF, put it on your website (or blog if you don’t have a website), hook it up to PayPal, and start having your ebook earn its keep!
Now with a print book, it’s got to be around 125 to 200 pages, or more, you’ve got to get it edited, have the cover designed, the interior formatted, a printer selected (on demand or brick and mortar), and a way to distribute those little gems. In my experience, this longer process scares a lot of aspiring authors back to the safety of their unfulfilled dreams. Well maybe not safety, but comfort zone.
And I’m not even discussing here those folks who want to find a literary agent or traditional publisher. That could be a really long haul—or never at all! (Been there…)
With an ebook you’ll still want to have it edited (please!), and a cover designed. You could format it yourself quite easily in Word—I do it all the time for my ebooks and those of my clients. But you have no printer issues and few distribution issues. At least, you don’t have to stock books in your garage and make trips to the post office to mail books.
Again, why ebooks? Because people are buying them—in droves. That’s a good enough reason for me!

I’ll give you an example. Let’s say you’ve been planning for a while to write an ebook. So you put it in your New Year’s goals and that’s that. When February rolls around and you see you haven’t gotten started, you wonder why. Well, here are some reasons. First, you didn’t schedule time in your daily schedule to work on the ebook. Time you schedule for your own projects is as important as time you set aside for clients and loved ones. Second, you didn’t formulate a plan as to how to proceed with writing your ebook.
That’s because you’ve never written an ebook before. So you have no idea where to start and how to proceed. It sounded like a good idea, everyone’s reading ebooks, many people are writing them—why not you? I agree, it’s a good idea, a great idea. But you need a plan.
That’s why I write ebooks and teach classes on how to write books and ebooks, because most people have no clue how to do it. I’ll give you a few quick hints here to start you on your plan.
First do the research and brainstorm some subjects and titles. What other books are out there on your topic? How can you be unique? Check Amazon to see who your competition is. Second, create an outline for what you want to cover in your book or ebook; this will become your table of contents. Next, go to your calendar and block off 2-hour periods of time to write. You might even want to get an accountability partner, like myself or a friend or associate. Then sit and write at those designated times. Don’t worry about being perfect in your first draft—just let the ideas pour out of your brain and onto the page.

Okay, some of you do have this problem—TMI—too much information. And it’s no surprise as we’re living in the Information Age. It comes at us 24/7 from all directions—and it’s awfully difficult to shut it down. At least we have to become discerning, as we just can’t take it all in.
So, sometimes one or more of my book clients will tell me the problem in getting their book written is too much content. Maybe they’ve been amassing ideas for years, waiting for that day when they’d find the time to write that elusive book. Or maybe they’re a research nut, like me, and they have all their stock in Google, because where would we be without it?
I do my best to help aspiring authors to overcome the “too much to write about” syndrome in several ways. I start with my 20 questions that helps to clarify what the book is about, the goals for the author and reader, and other specific details. Then we formulate the table of contents. They we decide about how long we want the book or ebook to be.
Then we look at where all the content is coming from. If it looks like there’s just too much information, I suggest that we may have more than one book here. Hey, a series is not a bad idea: just look at Chicken Soup and For Dummies. At this point we may plan out a series of books.
Additionally, this extra information can be used in articles, blog posts, workbooks, and other information products that can accompany the book or ebook.
But, if you’re still stuck with the TMI or “too much to write about” syndrome, I’ve been known to schedule a conference with the client and make the decisions for them. Well, someone has to move the project along, and that might be me.

When you’re just starting to think about writing a book, you may be one of those who fall into the category o thinking you don’t have enough to write about. After all a book should be at least 150 to 200 pages or more and you can’t think of that much to say.
First of all, there are all sizes of books from 25 page picture and quote books to 1,000 page tomes. Nowadays, almost anything goes! And with ebooks, the whole world of writing has taken a 180 degree turn. I’ve paid upwards of $50 for a 35-page ebook, thinking I was getting the brilliant answers to life’s tough questions. So no matter the size of the book, it’s the sizzle that sells.
Second, if you have an interest, a passion, or an expertise in the subject you want to write about, I’ll bet you have more than enough to write about. You can go really niche and write about a very specific topic like teaching your parakeet to recite the alphabet or you can go broad on a topic like teaching any bird to talk. It all depends on what the market is asking for and how much information is available on the subject.
What you don’t know, you can either research or take in a partner or two; that is, get a collaborator or conduct a few interviews to get more content for your book. And we all know the success story of the Chicken Soup model of having other people write your book for you!
So, please don’t use the “I don’t have enough to write about” excuse any longer. Remember, it’s sizzle over size, every time.

I’m not always a big fan of these virtual book campaigns to get authors to #1 on the Amazon bestseller list for one day! But sometimes I am!
What it looks like is the author gathers a bunch of friends, associates, or complete strangers to send a specific email to their lists in exchange for the author listing this “partner” as a bonus offer if someone buys the book.
Here’s how it works: THE AUTHOR – writes and publishes the book, creates a promotional e-mail, finds joint venture partners, and puts up a web page with the book offer plus the bonuses. I’ve seen these anywhere from 10 to 50 bonuses. Not always, but many times, this strategy will catapult the book to the top of the online bestseller lists for a short time.
THE JOINT VENTURE PARTNER – creates a bonus item for the campaign, usually a downloadable MP3 or report, then sends the pre-written e-mail to their list on designated days, either one day or several days. In order to get the bonus item, the book buyer has to opt in and provide an e-mail address, so the JV partner may add a bunch of names to their list. Being on this end has added more than 100 names to my list.
THE BOOK BUYER – buys the book at Amazon, then takes the transaction code and enters it on the author’s website where the book is listed for sale. Then you’re taken to a page with all the bonus items. You can claim them by signing up to be on their mailing list. One problem I’ve found being on this end is that I never have time to claim, read, or listen to all the bonuses, plus those that I’ve claimed put me on their list and now I get way more e-mails per day than I can handle.
Since I had a good response the last time I took part in one of these, I’m involved again with the same author. Loral Langemeier takes the confusion out of financial and investing matters and makes everything crystal clear. I’ve read all her past books and am looking forward to this one.

In my goal to develop my own information products, I’m moving right along in my plan. I originally got waylaid from creating an info-product, because I felt I had to re-write my website. That done, I then found I needed to do a few things before promoting my new site, such as getting a competent autoresponder. And although I’m still working on getting my autoresponder in place, what I’ve come to realize in putting any business together and especially an Internet marketing based business, is that you can’t let one hold up hold you up! So while you may be waiting for your web designer to finish your site, you could be writing articles, setting up your blog, or running around the web making friends (and hopefully business contacts) on Facebook, Twitter, Plurk, or whatever the newest social site is!
I’m still checking out a few autoresponders, waiting for a response from them to check out their customer support, so I need to move on to the next order of business. For me, that is getting my database together so I can send out announcements when my site is ready to go, which will be when my autoresponder is set up. At least that’s all I thought I’d need to do for my site to be “perfect.” That is until one of my colleagues hooked me up with a search engine specialist who checked out my rankings and told me to “get them keywords in there girlfriend!” Which means I need to have 1-2% keyword density on each page.
Darn! You know as a perfectionist writer, I only spent the last 6 months re-writing my website. Now I have to go back and make sure I have keyword density on each page??? Just another delay—no big deal. Hey, I’m a writer, that’s what I do. Only problem is, I’m going to need to set aside a few hours to do—ta da!!—keyword research. As a ghostwriter, I am available for anyone who needs to get something written but doesn’t have the time or talent! Or just plain doesn’t enjoy writing. Yet, some people don’t hire me because they feel they can’t afford it OR they like to be in complete control and have a tough time delegating to others. So if you are one of those who isn’t about to hire a writer, what can you do? Well if you run an Internet based business, let’s face it, you’ve got a lot of writing to do. You have your website content, articles, blog posts, reports, information products, emails, and more. There is a heck of a lot of writing needed with Internet marketing.
Yet, I do believe almost anyone can learn to write—well and fast! My services as a ghostwriter are for the “I-do-it-for-you” crowd. And my webinars and future info-products are for the “Do-it-yourself” crowd. I’ve been teaching how to write info-products in webinars for about a year, and pretty soon I’ll be holding my first 3-day web intensive in September. I’m confident that I can teach anyone the basics of writing all the materials they need to conduct a successful online venture.
A lot of what needs to be written can be boiled down into formulas or templates. Once you’ve written your first article, your second will go a whole lot faster. Once you’ve sweated over writing your first website, the second will require a lot less sweat. And once you’ve created your first e-book, you’ll be the info-product pro.
